Little is known about the sitter beyond the name recorded on the glass negative: Maj. B.L. Cadwalader. The Bain News Service, a Manhattan wire-photo operation founded by George Grantham Bain in the early twentieth century, supplied newspapers with images of public figures, and its negatives were captioned by staff, sometimes from hurried or unverified information. The Library of Congress holds the collection, and the record notes that the identification has not been confirmed, so the portrait is best read as a document of the Bain agency's working practice as much as of the man himself.
