This cyanotype shows the Washington residence of Justice Henry Billings Brown, who served as an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1891 to 1906. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a photographer working in the capital at the turn of the century, made a series of pictures of the homes of officials and prominent residents, part of a broader interest in documenting the city's architecture and social life. The cyanotype process, which produces a distinctive blue-and-white image, was an early and inexpensive printing method that had largely given way to silver-based prints by 1900. The record gives the date as about 1895, while the caption card suggests 1900, so the picture likely dates from the late 1890s.
