Allentown, the seat of Lehigh County in eastern Pennsylvania, was a fast-growing manufacturing city around the turn of the twentieth century. Its population was roughly 35,000 by 1900, and it drew much of its livelihood from the Lehigh Valley's rail lines, iron and steel works, cement plants, and textile and silk mills. The Lehigh Valley Railroad's yards and shops tied the city to coal and freight traffic moving across the region, which made the rail corridor a visible center of daily work. Residents of the period knew Allentown as an industrial town that had grown out of its colonial origins as Northampton Town and was named for William Allen in 1838. This bird's-eye view captures the grid of streets, church spires, and industrial edges that defined that moment of expansion.
