Key West in 1884 was a island town at the southern end of the Florida Keys, and it ranked among the largest and most prosperous cities in Florida. Cigar manufacturing drove much of its economy, with workshops employing many Cuban and Spanish immigrants who hand-rolled tobacco shipped in from Havana. Sponging, fishing, and trade through its harbor added to the town's commerce, and a U.S. Navy station on the island gave it a military presence. Residents and visitors knew Key West as the southernmost city in the continental United States, a distinction that set it apart from mainland Florida.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Key West, Florida, drawn in 1884. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
