The title on this glass negative, "Kimura San," combines a Japanese surname with the honorific "san," but the Bain News Service recorded it on caption cards without verification, so the subject's identity remains uncertain. Founded in New York around 1899 by George Grantham Bain, the agency supplied news photographs to newspapers, and its glass negatives document the fast-moving pictorial reporting of the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, so the exact year is unknown, but the plate format and agency origin place it within that period.
