Roses lie at the feet of a woman who stands beneath a marble cupid, the winged figure that has long symbolized romantic love. Pairing a living figure with a classical statue was a favorite device of late nineteenth and early twentieth century picture makers, who used such stagings to suggest sentiment and idealized devotion. Cupid, the Roman god of desire, became a standard emblem for Valentine's Day cards and sentimental imagery, and the flowers here extend that message. The record gives few details about the photographer or the exact setting, so the image is best read as a period expression of the holiday's romantic themes.
