St. Paul in 1873 was a state capital tied to the railroads and the grain trade, and that fall the national financial collapse reached its streets. Jay Cooke & Company, the Philadelphia banking house that had financed the Northern Pacific Railroad, failed in September, and the Panic of 1873 spread quickly through the country. Work on the Northern Pacific's line stalled, which left the city's hopes of becoming a far-western rail hub on hold and put many laborers and merchants out of work. Grasshoppers were also sweeping across Minnesota's farms that year, threatening the wheat that moved to the river landings. Residents knew their city as a place that depended on the rails, the river, and a good harvest, and in 1873 they had reason to worry about all three.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of St. Paul, Minnesota, drawn in 1873. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
