Few Revolutionary-era woodcuts set two American commanders side by side as directly as this one, which ran on the cover of *Bickerstaff's Boston Almanack* for 1778. Printed in Danvers, Massachusetts, by E. Russell at his office in the former Bell Tavern, it pairs George Washington with Horatio Gates, the officer who received the British surrender at Saratoga in October 1777. The pairing reflects the moment, since Gates's victory had made him a popular hero and his standing relative to Washington was a live question in Congress and the army by early 1778. Almanac covers like this one were inexpensive and widely circulated, which made them an effective way for local printers to bring current figures before ordinary readers.
