Among the many portraits of Thomas Jefferson in the gallery, this steel engraving stands out for its lineage: it was cut by T. Knight from a drawing by an artist named Bouch, a chain of hands that was typical of nineteenth-century book and magazine illustration. Steel plates could hold finer lines and survive far longer printing runs than copper, which made them the workhorse for reproducing likenesses of national figures in volumes sold across the country. Jefferson, who served as the third president and wrote the Declaration of Independence, was a natural subject for such publications, and engravings like this one helped shape how generations of Americans pictured him. The caption card leaves the date unrecorded, so the exact year of publication remains uncertain.
