Fontinelle Weller poses as Columbia, the female figure who had long personified the United States, here draped in the flag and arranged for the camera as a living emblem of the nation. Made in 1873, the card was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the figure a sense of depth a flat print could not. Stereograph cards like this were popular parlor entertainment in the 1870s, and the record also lists the writer Bret Harte among the names associated with the card. The mix of performance, costume and patriotic symbolism shows how closely everyday home amusement and national sentiment were linked in the years after the Civil War.
