Belle Isle, the large island park in the Detroit River, gives this scene its setting: a shaded forest drive where a lone cyclist and a horse-drawn carriage share the same winding road. Belle Isle was laid out as a public park in the 1880s, and its curving drives were built for leisure rather than commerce, so pleasure carriages and bicycles were a common sight there in the late 1800s. The bicycle boom of the 1890s brought cycling onto such park roads, and a picture like this one shows the uneasy mix of older and newer modes of travel on a single lane. Notice how the canopy of trees frames the road and the figures, a common device in period park views.
