The picture shows a tree in Snohomish, Washington, that became a local curiosity because bicycles had been fastened into its trunk and branches, a sight that drew visitors and photographers. Asahel Curtis, a Seattle photographer who documented the Pacific Northwest in the early twentieth century, made the image, and the catalog dates it to about 1911. Snohomish was then a small river town in Snohomish County, and its growing use of bicycles made the display stand out. The photograph is useful now as a record of how people in that period treated new machines as novelties, and of the commercial photography that circulated scenes like this across the region.
