This view shows Houston's second city hall, completed in 1872, a building that marked the young city's move toward a more permanent seat of government. Houston was then a busy trade center, shipping cotton and goods along Buffalo Bayou, and new rail connections were beginning to reshape its economy. Municipal buildings of this period often served as the public face of a growing town, bringing council meetings, city records and officials under one roof. The building's place in that expanding commercial district is a useful reminder of how quickly Houston was changing in the decades after the Civil War.
