A castle shadowed by ghostly figures makes this lithograph an unusual choice among the Halloween pictures, since its subject is a building rather than a costumed child or a jack-o'-lantern. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued it, produced thousands of hand-colored prints that sold cheaply to ordinary households across the country. Their output drew on the popular appetite for Gothic novels and ghost stories, a taste that was widespread in the nineteenth century well before Halloween became the commercial holiday it is today. The print offers a window into how American audiences imagined the supernatural.
