Watch meeting" names a New Year's Eve vigil, a service held on the last night of the year when congregations gathered to pray and wait for midnight. By the 1870s such services were common in American churches, and the custom was especially strong in Methodist and Black congregations, where people looked back on the year past and asked for guidance in the year ahead. This chromolithograph, issued by J. Latham & Company around 1878, is one of many color prints of the period that brought scenes of religious and town life into ordinary homes at modest cost. Its place among the winter prints suits the subject, since the service falls at the close of the year.
