The sitter is identified only as Mrs. L.J. Balsan, and the Library of Congress notes that this name comes from unverified information written on the negative or its caption card by the Bain News Service. The record gives no date, so the exact year of the portrait is unknown. The Bain News Service was a New York photographic agency that sold pictures of people, events and places to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives survive as the George Grantham Bain Collection. Its portraits were usually made for publication, so the sitter's name and the picture's purpose were recorded on the card, which is the main clue to who she was.
