Howard Thurston's name leads this poster, but the pets alongside him are what set it apart from the stage-magic bills of the period. Thurston was one of the best-known American magicians of the early 1900s, and his touring shows mixed mystery with novelty, with trained animals a crowd-pleasing part of the bill. Posters of this kind were usually bold, colorful lithographs meant to be read quickly from a street corner or theater lobby, so the animals would have caught passersby's eyes nearly as fast as the magician's name. The pairing of a showman with ordinary household pets was also a way to make a famous performer seem friendly and approachable.
