Children gathered around a decorated tree, with a greeting printed on the title, make a scene of holiday warmth. The Christmas tree was still a fairly new custom in English-speaking homes when such images were made. German families had long set up evergreens indoors, and the practice spread widely in Britain and the United States during the 19th century, helped by popular illustrations of royal and middle-class households. Pictures like this one were often sold as greeting-card art, so the sentimental wish printed on them is part of the point.
