Few library spaces carried a name as plain as the delivery room, the area where readers handed in call slips and staff fetched requested volumes from the stacks. Rooms like this were the working heart of a reading institution, where a brief exchange at the counter determined how quickly a book reached the table. As public libraries grew busier through the late 1800s, this part of the building was often the most crowded, and its layout shows how it directed traffic between those who waited and those who retrieved.
