The British Museum's reading room, shown here in an engraved interior view, was once one of the most famous study spaces in the world. Its great circular dome, completed in 1857, rose over a ring of desks where scholars, writers and clerks worked under a skylight. Engravings like this one helped carry the room's grand proportions to readers who would never visit London, and its lines of shelving and rows of tables still convey the hushed order of a serious library.
