Bill Mauldin's Independence Day cartoon ran in the Chicago Sun-Times on July 5, 1964, three days after President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act. Its subjects pair fireworks and holiday celebration with civil rights and legislation, a sign of how the Fourth of July was being judged that summer. Mauldin, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, built his reputation on wry commentary about ordinary soldiers and civilians alike, and this drawing, made with crayon, ink and blue pencil on layered board, shows the rough, layered technique he used to work out his images before publication.
