Takoma Park, a Maryland suburb just northwest of Washington, D.C., is the setting for this Fourth of July scene dated July 4, 1923. The picture is a glass negative from the National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio that recorded local life, civic events and places in the capital region in the early twentieth century. Glass plates were the standard medium of the period, and their large format held fine detail in faces, clothing and streetscapes. The record notes streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of the original coatings, which show the plate's age as clearly as the scene itself.
