Few details survive for this glass negative beyond its title, which the Bain News Service attached to the plate and which has not been verified, so the men pictured cannot be identified from the record. The title points to German submarine crews, whose U-boats threatened Atlantic shipping in both world wars, and survivors of sunk or surrendered boats were often photographed as news subjects. George Grantham Bain's agency in New York supplied pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century, so the plate likely reflects that commercial news trade. Viewers should read the scene as a press image rather than a confirmed record of a specific event.
