Three people are named in this glass negative, which is labeled "Mr. Gracey, Mr. Yarrow & Grace Yarrow at Erivan, Russia." Erivan, now Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, was then part of the Russian Empire. The caption comes from notes made by the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency founded by George Grantham Bain that sold news photographs to newspapers in the early 1900s. The record gives no date and does not say why the group was in Erivan, so the names and place are the main clues. The Caucasus was a region of travel, trade and political change at the time, which gives the picture its wider interest.
