The record gives only the label "V. Herbert," written by the Bain News Service on its negative or caption card, so the identification is provisional. The name most likely refers to Victor Herbert, the Irish-born composer and conductor whose operettas, including *Babes in Toyland* and *Naughty Marietta*, filled New York theaters in the early 1900s. Bain's New York operation produced many glass-plate portraits of performers, politicians and newsworthy figures for newspapers that needed pictures quickly. Herbert also helped found the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers in 1914, which gives useful context for a musician of his standing in that era.
