The view looks out across New York Bay from the Staten Island shoreline, a vantage that put the harbor's working waterfront and the growing skyline of Lower Manhattan in a single frame. In 1897 the bay was one of the busiest ports in the world, with ferries, cargo steamers and sailing vessels crossing between the boroughs and the Atlantic. Pan photographs of this kind, which joined several exposures into a wide panorama, were a popular way to show the scale of a city that had only recently consolidated its five boroughs. The picture is worth studying for the crowded waterline and the way the harbor serves as the city's main gateway.
