The lake in this 1913 view was created by Gatun Dam, which closed the Chagres River across the Panamanian isthmus and let the valley flood into a reservoir about 85 feet above sea level. Gatun Lake became the key stretch of the Panama Canal, carrying ships across the Continental Divide through a series of locks. Theodore Roosevelt, whose administration launched the canal project in 1904, visited the works in 1906 and pressed the effort through his presidency. The canal opened to shipping in August 1914, a year after this photograph was taken.
