A red and white gingham cloth with small printed flowers sets this picture apart from the fruit crate labels around it, offering a domestic textile in place of the orchard. Gingham is a plain-weave cotton checked by alternating dyed and undyed threads, and it became a staple of kitchens and farmhouse tables across the 19th and 20th centuries. Adding small floral prints over the check was a common way to dress up everyday cloth. Its place among the apple images suggests it may have served as a backdrop, a reminder of the tables where fruit was actually eaten.
