The title names Abraham Lincoln, whose second inaugural address called for "malice toward none" and a binding up of the nation's wounds. Its wording suggests it was made after his assassination in April 1865, when many Northern artists cast the late president as the author of peace between the sections. Gettysburg, where Union and Confederate armies fought in July 1863, later became the setting for veterans' reunions and monument dedications that staged that reconciliation in public. Prints like this one were meant to comfort a divided country as much as to record events.
