The estate at Dosoris, on Dosoris Island off Glen Cove on Long Island's North Shore, is the detail that sets this glass negative apart from other Bain News Service views. The Dana name points to the family of Charles A. Dana, the longtime editor of the New York *Sun*, who summered there. Glen Cove was a favored retreat for wealthy New York families in the early twentieth century, when grand waterfront estates lined the shore. The Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency active in New York from about 1900 to the 1920s, sold such views to newspapers and magazines, so the negative reflects the press demand for pictures of prominent places and the people who owned them.
