A seated pianist is the only subject the record names: a man identified only as "Larrmore," a name the Bain News Service attached to the negative or its caption card, and one the Library of Congress has not confirmed. Bain News Service, a New York picture agency founded by George Grantham Bain around 1899, sold images of people in the news, including stage performers, musicians and public figures, to newspapers and magazines. Its photographers often worked in studios or at events, and small glass negatives like this one were a standard format for that trade. Because the date is missing, the picture is best read as a glimpse of early twentieth-century press photography and its interest in entertainers at work.
