The title on this negative is "Cora Chase," a name taken from caption cards that the Bain News Service wrote at the time, though the Library of Congress notes that the attribution has not been verified. Bain's agency, founded in New York by George Grantham Bain, sent photographers out to cover news, public figures and everyday city life from about 1900 into the 1920s, and its glass plates are among the most detailed records of that era. Because the record gives no date, sitter details or setting, the picture is best read as one example of the agency's portrait and news work, with its glass-plate format reflecting the photographic methods of the period.
