The phrase "Over There" came from a George M. Cohan song that swept the country in 1917, and this poster borrows its tune of urgency to promise recruits a look at real warfare. Its wording speaks to young men who knew little about trench fighting. The setting, a cantonment at the 5th Regiment Armory, places it among the large training camps the Army built after the United States entered the war in April 1917. Posters like this one were meant to turn that training into enlistment and support for the war effort.
