A young girl with a pug and a sprig of holly gives this Victorian Christmas card its particular charm. Cards like it grew out of Henry Cole's first commercial Christmas card of 1843, and by the late nineteenth century color printing had made them cheap enough to send to friends and family in large numbers. Images of children with pets and winter greenery were especially popular, offering a picture of domestic warmth and innocence. Its place among health and beauty images suggests how often such scenes tied a cheerful, wholesome childhood to the ideals of the home.
