Dogs were not the usual choice for cigar art, and this label gives a German Shepherd's head the central place under the name El Favorito. Cigar makers printed lithographed labels for boxes and bundles to catch a buyer's eye, often using animals, women, and landscapes to suggest quality or charm. The German Shepherd was a fairly new breed when such labels were common, developed in Germany around 1899, so its appearance here hints at how quickly it was gaining public attention. Today these small printed pieces document both tobacco marketing and the popular tastes of their day.
