Les Darcy, the Australian boxer named on this glass negative, drew wide attention in the United States during the First World War. He had left New South Wales for America in 1916, hoping to build a reputation in the ring, and his career became entangled in the conscription debates back home. He died in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1917, at age 22. The record gives no date for the sitting, so the occasion is unknown, but the plate shows how the Bain News Service, based in New York, recorded sports figures of the period.
