Two women identified as Princesses Maria and Juliana of Stolberg-Werningen appear in this glass negative, though the title comes from caption cards that the Bain News Service recorded without verification. Bain's agency, founded in New York around 1899, distributed news photographs to newspapers, and its negatives document people and events of the early twentieth century. The Stolberg family was a German noble house with several princely lines, and the record gives no date, so the occasion of the sitting remains unknown.
