Soapine was a laundry soap sold under a brand name, and the picture's title is the only clue to what it advertised. Brand-name soaps like this one were heavily promoted in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when manufacturers used colorful trade cards, posters, and magazine ads to win over housewives. Soap was costly and labor-intensive to make at home, so commercial brands that promised cleaner washing and easier work at the tub or washboard became a familiar part of household life. Pictures like this one show how companies built their identity around the ordinary chores of the home.
