Soapine was a laundry soap made by the Kendall Manufacturing Company of Providence, Rhode Island, and this card is one of the small advertisements the firm handed out to shoppers. Trade cards like this were printed in color by commercial lithographers, often with cheerful scenes unrelated to the product, so customers would keep them. In the decades around 1900, when washing was still a heavy weekly chore, manufacturers relied on such ephemera to make their brands familiar in a crowded market. Note how the product name is worked into the design, a reminder that advertisers tied soap to cleanliness and household pride.
