Tiered galleries rising on slender columns give this hall its sense of height, a layout that libraries of the late 1800s and early 1900s often used to fit large collections and reading space into one room. Iron or cast-stone supports let architects open the floor below while keeping books within reach along the upper walkways. Halls like this were built as working reading rooms and as civic showpieces, so the ornament and the daylight from high windows were as deliberate as the shelving. The railings and column capitals are worth a close look for clues about the materials and period of construction.
