The title on this glass negative pairs two firm names, Balderson & Hayden and Swift & Co., with a man named Ed McLean under the heading "Friendship," though the National Photo Company's label is unverified and the record does not describe the scene. The plate dates from roughly 1918 to 1928, when the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C. commercial studio, made large numbers of negatives for newspapers, businesses and private clients. Herbert A. French gave it to the Library of Congress in 1947. Viewers should expect streaks and other blemishes, which come from the original coatings deteriorating over time.
