The Friendship Fire Department of Alexandria, Virginia, carries a name that speaks to the fellowship of its volunteers, and the company dates to 1774, making it one of the oldest such organizations in the region. The National Photo Company, a Washington firm that documented American towns and institutions in the early twentieth century, made this glass negative, which dates from roughly 1910 to 1920. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural deterioration of its original coating, a reminder of how fragile these early plates are.
