The title, "Working on the 'Florida,'" comes from caption data that the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or its card, and the library has not verified it, so the vessel or project it names is uncertain. The negative is dated November 1911, when the Bain agency, a New York news photography business, was supplying newspapers with pictures of shipping, construction and daily labor. Its glass plates, made in the large-format 5 by 7 inch size or smaller, were a standard way to record such scenes quickly, and the collection is valued for documenting the work behind the headlines of that era.
