Bellevue, Ohio, in 1888 was a railroad town of several thousand people, where several lines met in the farm country of northern Ohio. Its rail yards and depot drew workers and freight, and grain, livestock, and other farm goods moved through town toward markets farther east and south. Residents knew Bellevue as a busy junction, and the town's churches, schools, and fraternal lodges gave its civic life a steady center. The streets, rail facilities, and church spires shown here reflect a community that depended on the trains and on the surrounding countryside.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Bellevue, Ohio, drawn in 1888. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
