Soldiers and flags share the frame with the American Red Cross in this poster, which argues that loyalty to the nation and support for the Red Cross are the same duty. Gordon Grant, an illustrator best known for his maritime scenes, made it sometime between 1914 and 1918, when the Red Cross was growing quickly to care for wounded troops and to raise funds at home. Its appeal to Americans was that giving to the Red Cross was another way of standing behind the men at the front. The record also lists medical aspects of the war among its subjects, a reminder of how closely the organization's work was tied to military medicine.
