Columbus, Ohio, in 1872 was a state capital of about 31,000 people on the Scioto River, with the Ohio Statehouse, finished in 1861, anchoring the city at the head of Broad Street. Several railroad lines met in the city, drawing grain, livestock, and wholesale trade into town and supporting foundries, carriage shops, and mills that employed a growing working population. Government was a large part of local life, since the legislature met in the capitol and state offices, clerks, and visiting lobbyists filled the downtown blocks. Residents would have known the city as the seat of Franklin County and the commercial center of central Ohio, still expanding outward from its old riverfront streets.
