This glass negative is labeled "Madeline Northrup," but the Library of Congress notes that the name comes from unverified information on the negative or its caption card, so the sitter's identity remains uncertain. It belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of Bain News Service, a New York agency that George Grantham Bain founded in 1899 to supply newspapers with photographs of current events and notable people. Working on glass plates, Bain's photographers produced many portraits and news images in the early twentieth century, and the collection gives a broad picture of that period's public life.
