Drifting low over a wide river bend and a stand of cottonwood trees, these balloons show the sport at its most unhurried. Ballooning took off in the United States during the late twentieth century, when lightweight nylon envelopes and propane burners made flights practical for hobbyists rather than only for early aeronauts. Pilots at this kind of site often rely on the wind, so the choice of a river valley is deliberate: the cottonwoods mark the water's edge and help show how the air is moving. Notice how the balloons seem to hover just above the treetops, a view that only a low, slow flight could offer.
