Hot-air balloons rise over flat farmland just as the sun comes up, their colored envelopes glowing against a pale sky. Ballooning of this kind became a popular spectacle in the United States in the 1970s, when lighter, nylon fabrics and propane burners made flights safer and more practical than the early gas-filled craft of the 1800s. Mass ascensions and fairs drew crowds to open fields much like the one pictured here. Dawn was the preferred time to fly, since the air is usually calm then and the balloons can drift without the gusts that build as the day warms.
