The press itself is the subject here, a machine that for centuries pressed inked type onto paper and turned individual letters into books, newspapers and broadsides. Hand-operated presses of this kind spread printed texts across Europe and America from the 1400s onward, and later iron and steam-powered models made printing faster and cheaper. The photograph, posted to Flickr by Herkie under a Creative Commons license, focuses on the equipment rather than a named place or event, so its interest lies in the mechanics of printing.
